RAW WEDNESDAYS ::
are held 7 – 10pm every Wednesday at the InterUrban, #1 East Hastings, showcasing several local performers in dance and music, and providing a space for the city’s breakdancers to jam with local djs. In the summer months, each week features a different performance and have included powwow dance, capoeira, bhangra, filipino martial arts, hip hop dance and other local cultural performances. Projections film and video team has continued to film RAW’s performances and events as part of their interest and involvement. Dance classes at 7 followed by open floor till 10pm every week.
The setting of the Interurban provides for interactive viewing and participation from a diverse audience, from the local DTES residents to the accidental tourist passing by. The area is widely known for its high concentration of homeless people and drug users, but also as the gateway from Chinatown to Gastown. On RAW Wednesdays, the corner of Carrall and Hastings, is a cross roads where breakdancers, powwow dancers, capoeiristas, djs, musicians, local business owners, film makers, tourists, youth, DTES residents, and motorists passing by enjoy the visual power of performance and the positive energy juxtaposed a neighborhood defined most often by its infamy.
